As with much of what there is to see in the Western Desert the Black Desert’s attraction is its landscape. Starting some 7 km south of Bahariya a series of black-topped mountains rise out of the desert floor where a geological fold; further south you enter the Black Desert where the desert floor is littered with black stones and sand. A pyramid-shaped mountain Jebel Gala Siwa was once a lookout post for caravans heading from Siwa to Bahariya whilst the coloured strata of Jebel as-Zukak has a winding path to the top.
