Junagarh Fort is the city’s premier attraction, an unassailable fortress which has never been conquered. Built in 1593 A.D. by Raja Rai Singh, one of the most distinguished generals in the army of Emperor Akbar, the fort is a formidable structure encircled by a moat and walls some 1 kilometre long; 37 bastions provide further reinforcement as if it were necessary.
The main entrance to the fort is the east-facing Karan Pol. Next to it is the Suraj Pol, the Sun Gate. Within there are a number of wonderful palaces, such as the Anup Mahal, Ganga Niwas and Rang Mahal – the Pleasure Palace. The Har Mandir is the majestic chapel of the royal family for worshipping their gods and goddesses. Constructed in red sandstone and marble these palaces add together to form a wonderful ensemble of courtyards, balconies, kiosks and windows.
The premises also houses the Prachina Cultural Centre and Museum and focuses on the impact of the British in the time leading up to Independence. There are excellent, well-labelled exhibits providing a unique window into Raj-era life for the elite and which include menu cards and even crockery! There are wonderful costumes and jewellery and a visit is well worthwhile.
