The somewhat strange Bhimsen Tower looks like an incongruously-placed lighthouse on the edge of the old town in the Sundara area of the city. It was built in 1826 by the Rana prime minister, Bhimsen Thapa, as part of the city's first European-style palace. It rises to 61.8m and provides excellent views over the city and beyond.
