A visit to the Beit al Suhaymi reveals a restored Mameluke mansion, perhaps the finest example in the whole of Cairo. Actually two separate houses built in 1648 and 1796 but since combined the house was lived in until the 1960s. The traditional courtyard is bordered on one side by the haremlik or women’s quarters and which has a domed bathroom; it is from haremlik, forbidden, that we get the word harem.
