Hilltop Wat Banan was built in the middle of the 11th century and is the best preserved temple of the Battambang area. Located some 20km from town Phnom Banam - Banam Hill - rises 400m out of the countryside; the temple complex sits atop it.
It is a steep climb up but well worth it – the views are excellent – as are the 5 towers that are said to have been influential in deciding the design of Angkor Wat. Enjoy the tumbled-down nature of the site with carvings and statues scattered about, and also the quietness (unless accompanied by local kids!) as Wat Banan and Battambang are relatively little-visited.
