Barka Fort is a major attraction of the Batinah Coast and well worth a look if close by. It actually comprised of two strongholds, one from Ya’arubi times inside the other from the later Al Bu Said dynasty. The fort was the scene of important political events when the occupying Persians were tricked into sitting with the Omanis for a feast inside the fort and were then massacred, heralding the start of the Al Bu Said dynasty. Today it is impressive with both round and square towers; nearby is the famous photogenic fish-market.
