Yeak Laom Lake lies in an area of protected forest managed by indigenous highlanders of this part of eastern Cambodia. Local Tampuen people say the lake is a gift from the spirits, whilst scientists attribute it to volcanic activity – whichever is true it an exquisite and deeply spiritual place.
The forest around the lake is beautiful, with a forest of tall trees and lush undergrowth which includes bamboo, wild ginger and ferns. Brightly coloured butterflies feed around the lake edge and two wooden platforms provide convenient access for swimming. A trail through the forest around the lake takes about forty minutes.
