Once part of the coastline Bafa Lake was cut off from the sea with the movements of the Menderes River valley. The Besparmak – ‘five finger’ – Mountain towers over the lake. In history this was Mount Latmos and the entire area was an important trading site holding as it did Priene and Miletus. Today the lake is surrounded by the remains of Byzantine monasteries and churches with its most important ancient draw being the remains of Heracleia at the modern village of Kapıkirı. The lake is a magnet for migrating birds and the entire area provides opportunities for birding, walking or enjoying a boat ride for those with time. Access is easy with Kapıkirı lying around 12km of the main road south from Ephesus to Bodrum.
