The Auckland Islands are a collection of Pacific Sub Antarctic Islands. There were early colonies on Enderby Island, first of Maoris, then Europeans, but by the mid 19th Century, none remained. These are islands of shipwrecks – so many, in fact, that the New Zealand government set up a hut for castaways containing food and clothing.
The islands are now home to a rich variety of plant, animal (mainly sea lions) and bird life – including penguins, albatross and mollymawks.
