The remarkable Santa Catalina Convent, just a couple of blocks from Arequipa’s main square, is an essential part of any visit to the area. Covering an area of almost 30,000 square metres, exploring the alleys, patios, living quarters and chapels within this brightly painted labyrinth contained within the Convent’s inpenitrable walls, it is easy to imagine 400 years of solitude experienced by its inhabitants up until it opened its doors in 1970.
Founded in 1580 under the rule of Viceroy Toledo, the Private Monastery of Nuns of the Order of Santa Catalina of Sena is a masterpiece of colonial architecture, and houses some of the finest examples of Spanish American religious art.
