The walls of the Citadel enclose the remains of ancient Philadelphia, a Greco-Roman city once part of the Decapolis. They enclose the remains of the Temple of Hercules, the Ommayed Palace and a small Byzantine Basilica.

The Temple of Hercules dates from the reign of Marcus Aurelius (169AD – 177AD), but little remains. The Basilica too is in poor repair, earthquakes damaging it and other remains. The best preserved and youngest remains are those of the 8th century Ommayed Palace, again a victim of earthquake damage.

Whilst the buildings in the Citadel are damaged there are excellent views from the ramparts over the city and Roman Theatre below.
