Travel Experts: Intrepid Travel

Small Group Real Life Experiences

Intrepid Travel started in 1989 with a passion to get travellers off the beaten track. We wanted to share some of the special places we knew and introduce our travellers to different cultures and ways of life.

We wanted to develop a style of travel that was all together different, where as travellers we became a part of country - and not just tourists looking in.

We wanted to have fun, meet people, learn things, explore, and do stuff we could never do at home. We wanted to travel by anything and everything, and stay anywhere and everywhere! We wanted to be intrepid!

Today Intrepid Travel has over 600 different trips in over 100 different destinations and many different styles of travel and yet our philosophy on travel is unchanged.

Background

At Intrepid we believe that travel is one of the most entertaining, enlightening, life changing and fulfilling things you could ever do, and having operated trips throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America for almost 20 years, we've got a fair idea of how good it can get.

We're one of the world’s leading small group adventure tour operators and for us travel is all about experiencing those 'real' moments; be it a laugh with a stall owner while haggling over bananas, an impromptu game of football with the local village kids, a home cooked meal under a starry desert sky or that thrill you get when you glimpse one of the great icons of the world for the first time.

Over the years, Intrepid have developed many different styles of travel — styles that share a common philosophy of getting out there and experiencing the real world — and yet styles that are quite different from each other. From our Basix range which breaks boundaries, not budgets, to our Comfort range which combines grassroots travel with some of life's small pleasures, there's an Intrepid adventure to suit just about every budget and comfort level. Best of all our journeys have an average group size of just 10 travellers so you have the freedom and flexibility to get off the tourist trails and really experience local cultures.

Whether it’s a Thai homestay, a Peruvian trek, an Italian feast or an African safari, Intrepid takes travellers to over 90 destinations worldwide to explore some of the world's most amazing places and discover real people, real cultures and have incredible real life experiences along the way.

Responsible Travel

We are committed to a style of travel that is environmentally, culturally and socially responsible – we call this responsible travel. Travelling this way means you will contribute directly to local economies and have more opportunities to meet the locals.

In many parts of the world, Intrepid Travel works with highly reputable local operators. These local partners are all passionate and enthusiastic about the countries they operate in, and offer the same high standards as Intrepid. By working closely with these local companies, we are best able to put money back into the local economies of those countries through which we travel.

Products & Services

ORIGINAL

Season: Year round

This is how it all started; the trips that made us one of the world's leading operators of small group adventures. And they're still as popular as ever! Original trips are all about variety: the places, the people, the activities, and even the accommodation and transport we use. From homestays to market trips to visits to community projects, there's a new experience every day, with many activities included.

BASIX

Season: Year round

The best value adventures on the planet! On a Basix trip, you can expect some amazing experiences, but none of the inclusions or 'extras' that you may not want. Which means simple and often multishare accommodation and a lot of local transport. These trips are ideal for first time travellers seeking fun and independence with the security of a group leader at hand and for backpackers wanting minimum hassle and maximum flexibility at the lowest possible price!

COMFORT

Season: Year round

Comfort is your kind of style if you want a few little extras, but don't want to compromise on the whole grassroots travel experience. You get to stay in better hotels and guesthouses, all with plenty of local character, and may travel in private transport as well as joining locals on public transport. You're as likely to find yourself paddling a kayak as relaxing on a cruise along the Yangtze River. These are real life experiences, just with a softer landing. And all for just a little more than our Original adventures.

FAMILY

Season: Year round

A long way from the typical 'child friendly holiday', Family adventures give your kids a chance to discover the world as you do. And the best thing is there's just as much for parents to enjoy too. NOTE: this is not a baby sitting service; far from it, these trips are an opportunity to spend time together in a truly stimulating way. And with the security of an experienced team leader on hand, you don't need to be well travelled - just ready for adventure!

ACTIVE

Season: Year round

Thrilling adventures is the simplest way to describe these trips. As you'd expect, activity is the key. Though we're talking cycling, kayaking and walking rather than rock climbing or paragliding - we'll leave the extreme sports to the experts! Active trips offer real life experiences, combining a challenging day's hike, say, with a night's stay in a hilltribe village. You don't need to be super fit for all Active trips, but they're ideal if you want a physical challenge along with plenty of cultural interaction.

INDEPENDENT

Season: Year round

If you're looking for something different (perhaps group travel isn't for you) or you want an extension to your Intrepid trip, an Independent adventure could be just the thing. These private itineraries can accommodate a special interest, such as cookery or meditation, or can be as simple as a beach. Transport, accommodation standard and inclusions vary from trip to trip - please check the trip notes for full details.

OVERLAND

Season: Year round

Big adventures through big landscapes; these journeys take you well off the beaten track to experience the sights, sounds and smells of remote regions up close. Travelling in purpose built vehicles along rugged roads, you'll search for wildlife, visit isolated communities and camp in tents. On an Overland journey you're more than just a passenger, you're part of the crew, pitching in to set up camp, shop for food and even cook. And, like all great adventures, the more you put in the more you'll get out!
