Over the years, Buffalo Tours have pioneered new destinations and experiences and continue to do so today. We consistently push the boundaries by creating unique and authentic travel options and innovative itineraries.

To illustrate, Buffalo Tours introduced sea kayaking tours to Halong Bay and discovered Mai Chau in Vietnam, an excellent area for trekking and homestays and were the first company to arrange classic cycling tours from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. We have developed attractive fundraising and volunteer-focused projects. Our Jewel of the Delta is the only tourist boat on the Red River and the only alternative way to get to Halong Bay, other than by road. We have developed similar activities in Cambodia and Laos.

Our latest exciting offering builds on our close ties with Mai Chau, where we have opened a boutique-style lodge, which will provide an alternative to homestays.

Our memberships include, Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), Sustainable Travel International (STA) and Wild Asia.

Responsible Travel

The vast majority of Buffalo Tours’ staff are locally employed and all our guides are, ensuring a more authentic experience for travelers, as well as sensitivity to local customs and culture. We also involve local communities in remote areas that we travel to. An example of this is Mai Chau in Vietnam, where we ask local communities for input into our treks and to provide homestay accommodation. Buffalo Tours also had NGOs undertaking independent assessments and interviews with local communities about our lodge development in Mai Chau and are employing local ethnic minority staff there.

We are involved in a number of initiatives and are always looking to develop more. We donate thousands of dollars annually to humanitarian causes and were the first travel company in Vietnam to offer volunteer travel. Our genuine commitment to Responsible Travel is increasingly well-known and our programs are evolving. Buffalo Tours’ CEO, recently won the 2007 ‘Face of the Future’ award from the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), in recognition for his positive contribution to the local community in promoting sustainable practices.

Trekking

Season: Year round

We are specialists in adventure travel in the Indochina region. In Vietnam, our treks are mostly in north of the country, and within 2 main areas – Sapa near the Chinese border in the north west, and the less-visited but equally beautiful Mai Chau region, west of Hanoi near the Laos border. Both these areas allow for day-trekking while returning to hotels or lodges for the night, or guests can stay in basic homestays.

We were the first company to offer treks in the beautiful Mai Chau area and are constantly finding new places for our travellers to explore. Our trips run on a private basis so it is just you, your guide and the local villagers for company!

In Laos a new generation of community-based tourism projects connect government offices to local tour companies and villages has been created. Together this alliance can provide tourism products which effect communities in a positive way. The projects generate jobs and limits numbers of visitors; they also promote remote areas and makes these low income regions a new and interesting destination for responsible visitors.

Cycling

Season: Year round

Cycling is what Buffalo Tours is famous for. We have a range of European and US built mountain-bikes just waiting for you to hop onto and explore stunning Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Our specialist cycling guides are here to encourage you up those hills, but don’t worry, if it all gets too much, we always have a back up vehicle on hand.

Voluntourism

Season: Year round

Constantly evolving, unique travel options including charity/fundraising tours and Volunteer-Community projects combined with travel and special interest tours based on individual hobbies and passions. English teaching, assisting teachers at a disabled children’s centre or volunteering to protect the environment in Cuc Phuong National Park in Vietnam. Build a school or teach English to monks in Laos.
