Major Henry Douglas Warden erected the First Raadsaal in 1949. This modest building with its dung floors and thatched roof was used as a school building, church and social venue, and housed almost all of the original civil institutions in Bloemfontein's early days. The First Raadsaal is a museum where the origin of Bloemfontein is depicted.
