The souks of Marrakesh are a sight in themselves. Located directly north of Djemaa el Fna, a maze of winding, covered and pedestrian streets literally overflow with shops selling every item imaginable - much of it great quality, local and hand-made. The souks are divided into areas by goods, with craftsmen often seen at work making quite intricate items. The main street is called Rue Souk Smarine, which runs north from the square. Popular purchases are Ali Baba-style slippers (known as babouche), carpets, rugs, metalwork, spices, leather goods and colourful pottery.

Souks of Marrakech: Getting lost!

It took us a couple of days before we deliberately got ourselves lost in the souks. "I wonder where this leads . . ." Haggling was great fun and enjoyed by all. We have developed a scene – Val or I want the item, the other doesn’t, so we argue not just with the seller, but with each other – ‘There’ll be no money for dinner tonight if you buy that,’ etc, etc. Both seller and I talk of starving children, the anger of our wives, and so on.
The only slight problem comes when a shopkeeper says, ‘Only 250 dirhams,’ and before I have a chance to say ’50,’ Val butts in with ‘100.’!!! I really enjoy it though and at the end of the session it isn’t just what is actually paid the matters (though of course it does) but the fun spent haggling!

Souks of Marrakech: A different 'high-street'

This really is shopping with a difference. You can easily idle away a good half a day in the Souks, with so many things to see and sample. Get ready for each shopkeeper to say 'hello, please look' but apart from that there are no heavy sales pitches. Stop, look, ask questions and pick up a few bargains. Don't be scared to haggle as it is expected and easy. It is easy to get lost in the Souks but that really is part of the fun!
