Rating

We had wrongly expected most people in the square to be tourists rather than Moroccan. It was the fact that most weren't tourists that we liked about the place so much. The swirl of activity, the pulse of sound, the smell of smoke in the evenings form dozens of barbecues . . . But please god don't send me back to a Marakechi snake charmer in my next life. I promise I'll be good.

We spent most of one evening in the square on our first night in Marrakech. It was great fun watching some of the entertainers and then sampling some nice spicy food cooked on skewers over open flames. Cheap and cheerful and good fun!

If you think things go quiet after sun down, then think again! The Djemaa el Fna is a great place to sit and sample some local food, have a drink and basically watch life go by. Some of the entertainers were not quite my cup of tea, but that's all part of the show, and 4 glasses of the orange juice does funny things to the tummy (but it is very good). Make a b-line to the square and be ready for the spectacle!
