The Tham Sang caves are another half day trip to fill one of those lazy Vang Vieng days. You’ll need transport to get here as the caves are around 13km north of town. There are several caves here but Tham Sang, Tham Loup and Tham Hoi are the three most people visit (though Tham Nam is accessible on foot in the dry season; by tube in the wet).
Tham Sang means ‘Elephant Cave’ with several Buddha images – a popular devotional act in Laos. Next you’ll have to walk the best part of a kilometre to get to the Tham Hoi and Tham Loup pair; the former has a Buddha image and extends for at least 3km underground, Tham Loup is less explored and has great formations.
