A highlight of Luang Prabang Pak Ou Caves lie 25km from town. The caves have been vivited for millennia and were used for the worship of the river spirits until Buddhism entered Laos. Over the last 6 centuries more than 4,000 Buddha images have been placed in them.
The caves site in a limestone cliff where the Nam Ou river meets the Mekong.
The lower, smaller cave is called Tham Ting and is light; the higher cave Tham Phum is deep and inky black, the interior invisible without a torch.
Most people get to the Pak Ou caves by river from Luang Prabang and arrive at the jetty under Tham Ting; a new road is making it easier for jumbos to make the journey by land, arriving at a small village opposite from where.
More a shrine than a cave there are places for devotion and walkways take you closer to the many images. Another path against the face of the cliff leads to Tham Phum, the repository for most of the estimated 4,000 Buddha images; bring a torch or you will see nothing.
