Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area is located in the southwest of the Bolaven Plateau. Covering 1100 sq km of jungle and forest it consists of semi-dry evergreen forest. Lowland plains comprise well over half of the protected area at elevations from 100m to 300m. Steep slopes rise to the edge of the Boloven Plateau at an elevation of around 1,000m and peaks near the plateau rim reach 1,300m. Elephant, grey-faced tit-babbler, yellow-cheeked gibbon and – reputedly – tiger make their home here.

There are opportunities for trekking and walking as there are several trails to follow. A local guide is essential.
