The site of Mar Elias has associations with the prophet Elijah who was said to have been born close by in the village of Lesteb. On his death the site became a pilgrimage spot and excavation in the late nineties lead to the discovery of a large 7th century church complex.

The mosaic floor can still be seen along with tombs and a water cistern.
