Chunar has an immense fort overlooking the River Ganges and has been the scene of many battles since 1540 when the great Sher Shah took it from the Moghul Emperor Humayun. Recaptured by Akbar in 1575 in the mid-18th century it was appropriated by the Nawabs of Awadh (Lucknow) and subsequently the British. The fort has a sundial and a huge well, and affords a splendid view of the river.
