For sheer romantic luxury the Lake Palace Hotel is hard to beat. One time palace of a Maharaja and floating in the middle of Lake Pichola the hotel is the place to stay in Udaipur for the discerning.

The palace was built on Jagniwas Island in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, 62nd successor to the royal dynasty of Mewar, the ruling dynasty of the Udaipur region and believed to be descendants of the Sun God. With its backdrop of the Aravalli Hills and the foreground occupied by the stunning City Palace the hotel is an almost surreal vision in white marble.

Hotel management understandably discourage non-resident visitors although it is possible to make a reservation and take a launch over to the hotel for lunch or dinner – dress appropriately.
