The dhobi wallah is the laundryman of India and the dhobi ghats the place where he works. These ghats are unique feature of Mumbai and comprise of row upon row of concrete wash baths, each fitted with its own stone for pounding the clothes clean. The clothes are soaked in the soapy water, beaten on the stones till clean, rinsed, starched and dried before being ironed. This is no place for expensive items of clothing… 

The most famous of these dhobi ghats is at Saat Rasta near Mahalaxmi Station.
