The fort walls encompass not just the Raj Mahal and fine havelis but Jaisalmer’s very own group of beautiful Jain temples. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries they are exquisitely carved and are dedicated to Rikhab Devji and Sambhavnathji. Inside the temple precincts lies the Gyan Bhandar, a library containing ancient manuscripts.

The Jains of Jaisalmer were shrewd businessmen and brought wealth to the city. It is because of this that, when permission to build within the fort was requested of the Maharaja his ascent was given. They belong to the Swetamber sect of Jainism.

The Parswanath temple is open to visitors till 12:00hrs (as are the Shiva and Ganesh temples) and is the oldest and the most beautiful of the complex. Fine carved animals and figures adorn the walls of the sanctum and there is a small dome crowned by an amalak and a water pot containing a lotus flower.
