The Raj Mahal is buried deep in the heart of Jaisalmer Fort. Meaning ‘Royal Palace’ the building towers some seven storeys high. Much of the palace is open for public viewing and recent renovations have helped preserve the interior.
The Rang Mahal with its mirror and paintwork work and the Juna Mahal with its jali screens should not be missed. The Sarvotam Vilas, built by Akhai Singh in the late 18th century has beautiful blue tiles and mosaics. Other rooms have finely detailed frescoes over both walls and ceilings. Well worth a visit this is one of Rajasthan’s oldest palaces.
