16km northwest from Jaisalmer lies Lodurva the ancient capital of Jaisalmer and now a silent ghost city. The city was most probably founded by the Lodhra Rajputs, passing to the ruler of Devagarh, Bhatti Devaraja, in the 10th century. 1025 saw Mahmud of Ghazni, an Afghan conqueror, lay siege to the town and the town had the misfortune to be sacked several times more over the following decades, its defences being poor. This prompted Jaisal to create a new capital and Jaisalmer was born in 1156.

The town’s Jain temples were rebuilt in the 1970s and enshrine an image of Parasnath, the 23rd Jain tirthankar. It is finely wrought in silver and surrounded by fine sculptures. A fine torana or arched gateway finely carved like Jaisalmer’s havelis is another reminder of its past.
