The desert villages surrounding Jaisalmer are some of the remotest in the state. Traditional life carries on largely unchanged over the last several hundred years. The proximity of villages like Khuri to the sensitive border with Pakistan also limited visitors until recently when restrictions were relaxed.
The huts in Khuri as with other villages of the region are built with mud and are decorated with attractive geometric patterns. The people of the village remain as elsewhere in the state dress very traditionally, the bright colours of the women’s saris contrasting perfectly with the mute desert sand colours of the landscape and village huts.
Khuri has its own sand dunes and there are some fairly rudimentary places to stay. Alternatively you can camp – a great experience and highly recommended. Bookings should be made through an experienced and reputable operator to ensure quality and a fair deal for local people.
