The ruins of Topoxte, located on a small island in Lake Yaxha, are the largest post classic Maya site in the Petén Basin. This small, captivating site has unusual architectural features, including columns that are much like those found at the Yucatec site of Chichen Itza. 

The site was first occupied as a residential city for local elites from Yaxha as well as being a fortified city where Maya warriors put up a courageous defence against Spanish forces.
