Tikal’s Gran Plaza, at the centre of the site, is formed of a courtyard surrounded by the single largest concentration of structures at Tikal. Of those structures are Temple I which towers 145 feet high, Temple II, at 120 feet, the North Acropolis, with its dozens of stela and altars and the Central Acropolis and the Five Story Palace. A walk up the palace’s lateral stairway leads to a stunning view above the tree canopy which at sunset and sunrise is not to be missed. With Temple V in the distance this is a superb backdrop for some serious birdwatching.
