Dos Pilas is a late Classic site inhabited from around 600 to 760 A.D and was the centre of a formidable empire with a population of around 10,000. The stelae tell that its rulers resorted to warfare in order to expand their domination in the region and it is thought that the site was abandoned due to these constant wars.
The ruins of Dos Pilas contain 19 altars, 19 panels, a hieroglyphic bench, and 4 hieroglyphic stairways. As well as16 preserved carved stelae, other carvings and a network of caves have been found at the site.
The most beautiful sculpture is called the Red Stela because it’s red, blue, and yellow coloured stucco can clearly be seen. Ceramic artefacts have been found in one of the tombs probably belonging to one of its rulers.
