The town of San Juan Cotzal is located in the valley, sheltered by the Cuchumatanes mountains and is often wrapped in mist. The town comes alive twice a week with the market which takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

From the town there is some great hill walking in the mountains along many of the hiking trails.
