Chajul is the most traditional of the Ixil towns, its streets are filled with old adobe houses with wooden beams and red-tiled roofs. The huge church in the plaza boasts a superb wooden ceiling of beams and gold leaf. The market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays which is the best time to visit.
The women of the town are fantastic weavers and their huipiles are richly embroidered with animals and symbols. Some of the best-quality handmade textiles in the country are available at the Va'l Vaq Quyol shop run by the local weaving co-operative.
