The famous handicraft market of Chichicastenango in the mountains of Quiche is one of the largest trading centres in the Maya area.

Traders begin setting up their booths in the main plaza and adjacent streets of the town, the night before the market and continue into the early hours. The textiles on sale at this market are of outstanding quality and its manufacture of masks, used by dancers in traditional dances, have also made this town famous for woodcarving.

Visitors here can often barter with the local traders to get a genuine bargain. This is an enjoyable exercise which, so long as both sides are reasonable, created a win-win situation for all involved!
