The Western Highlands run all the way from Antigua to the border of Mexico and is home to the majority of Guatemalan's indigenous people, who live mostly in small villages perched on the hillsides or in the valleys.
Most of the inhabitants are descendants of the Maya and many of the 23 distinct ethnic groups continue to speak their own languages, such as Cakchiquel, Mam, and Tzutuhil.
Most of the villagers survive on subsistence farming, selling what little is left over at the weekly market which is as much a social gathering as anything else. Fruits, vegetables, brightly coloured woven textiles and a whole range of other products are bought and sold at these markets.
