A small and remote isle, this is home to the friendly Napier family who are direct descendents from the original owner of the island, Arthur Felton, who established a small sheep farm here in 1879. An environmental visionary, Felton and the generations that followed have worked hard to eradicate introduced species from the island and replant the threatened tussock grass that provides homes for much of the local birdlife.

With the highest cliffs in the Falklands, West Point Island is captivating and dramatic. One of the main attractions though is the diverse bird life, including enormous colonies of rock-hopper penguins and black-browed albatross. An excellent 30 minute walk from the Napiers’ house (or 10 minutes drive in their Land-Rover) leads to the dramatic Devil’s Nose where hours can slip by observing the fascinating dynamics of a rock-hopper and albatross colony.

A popular stopping point for cruise ships, the beautiful West Point Island is not easy to reach by air, due to the exposed landing strip. All those who visit leave with fond memories, not least of all because of the warm welcome afforded by the Napiers who invite everyone in for a cup of tea and cakes.
