Sea Lion Island is one of the most visited of the Falkland Islands and it certainly has much to offer given its small size. Located just 15km from the coast of East Islands it is just 8km by 2km across, so easily explored on foot.
Excellent management techniques on the islands has seen farming exist alongside wildlife without causing the usual damage, and the important tussock grass habitats thrive here. Rat free too, much of the more sensitive birdlife that has been wiped out elsewhere can survive here on the sandy beaches, cliffs, rolling countryside, heathland and lagoon-filled wetlands.
The island’s 47 different species of breeding birds include four types of penguins and five of birds of prey. Killer whales circle the island in pursuit of sea lions and elephant seals breed there in enormous numbers between September and November. Leopard seals and larger whales may also be seen.
The famous Sea Lion Lodge, located on the island, is advertised as “the most southerly British hotel in the world” and is a fabulous place to spend several days.
