Saunders Island was the location of the first British colony in the Falkland Islands at Port Egmont. Over time, ownership was wrestled between the French, the Spanish and the Argentines, but since 1987 it has been owned by an Argentine family.

Here visitors can experience nature and wildlife at its best: there are good opportunities to roam along white sandy beaches, while out to sea dolphin and whales can be seen. Penguins provide endless hours of entertainment, and the Rookery is a magical place where the hours will slip by unnoticed as you become absorbed in watching the antics of the charming little Rockhopper penguins, amidst the black-browed albatross and cormorants.

The Neck, the narrowest stretch of Saunders Island offers one of the most memorable accommodation possibilities on the island. Located a 4 hour hike or 1 hour drive from the nearest settlement, a little self catering hut known as the Portakabin offers a wildly remote place to stay between colonies of four different penguin species and countless other bird varieties. A truly wild experience!
