New Island was one of the earliest of the islands to be colonized and has seen its fair share of different approaches to management. With the introduction of rabbits, sheep and cattle over time, much has been done to restore the island to its natural form and it is now a nature reserve.

Here lives an abundance of wildlife, including fur seals, elephant seals, southern sea lions, thin-billed prions, rockhopper, gentoo and Magellanic penguins, dolphin gulls and black-browed albatrosses – indeed 41 of the Falklands’ 61 breeding bird species can be found here.

Local residents include Tony & Kim Chater and Ian & Maria Strange, who as well as running the reserves are well respected as photographers, artists and authors of wildlife guides.

New Island is only accessible to cruise visitors.
