Dominating Islamic Cairo from its position atop a hill to the east is Salahadin’s Citadel. Built during the 1170s it towers over the city and on a clear day (admittedly a rarity) the Pyramids are visible from its ramparts. The impressive Mohammed Ali Mosque was built during the early years of the 19th century on the foundations of past Sultans’ palaces. The Citadel is still a military fortification with parts of it closed to the public, but a walk on its walls is a great way of appreciating the mosques and minarets of Cairo.
