Sehel island is home to both friendly Nubian families and some famous rock inscriptions which date back to the Pharaoh Djoser (2667-2648 BCE). The inscriptions can be found at the southern end of the island, the most famous is the ‘famine stele’ which is from Ptolemaic times and details a seven-year famine that struck during Djoser’s time. After seeing the inscriptions a walk around the village will have gaggles of laughing kids following you and can be a pleasant way of meeting locals if your visit is sensitive.
