The city is justifiably proud of the Greco-Roman Antiquities Museum which houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from this period anywhere in the world. The local cult during this period covering six hundred years from 300BCE centred around the cult of Serapis, depicted as a bull. Rooms are ordered chronologically and contain some magnificent exhibits, particularly the Apis bull sculptures along with mummies, an example of a portrait from Fayyoum and excellent exhibits from the Persian era.
