Neighbouring the Mosque of Ibn Tulun is the Gayer Anderson Museum a complex of two old houses – one for the men, the selamlik, and one for the women, the haremlik. The women could cross from one to another by means of a 2nd floor walkway whilst mashrabiyeh screens enabled them to view the scene below without being observed. Today the building is a museum with an eclectic mix of furnishings giving an insight into an Ottoman-era house. Each room has a different theme – Damascus, Persian, Turkish and even Byzantine and there are even some Pharaonic antiquities on display.
