Fishawi’s is an institution amongst locals and travellers alike. A traditional ahwa or coffee house it is tucked away in a back-alley on the edge of the Khan el Khalili bazaar in Islamic Cairo. Claiming to have been continuously open for some 200 years you can enjoy a tea amongst its regular patrons who steadily puff on sheesha water-pipes. The interior is decorated with carved wooden screen-work and hung with large mirrors, whilst brass-topped tables surrounded by bow-backed chairs fill the floor space. It’s an atmospheric place to spend a half hour or so and one not to be missed if in the area.
