El Alamein was the site of a ferocious battle during July 1942 between the troops of General Montgomery’s Allied Eighth Army and the German Afrika Korps under General Erwin Rommel. Here Montgomery halted the German-Italian advance towards Cairo in what was one of the largest tank battles ever fought: some 11,000 soldiers were killed. The cemeteries make for a poignant stop en route to Siwa or indeed as a day trip from Alexandria.
