Spreading out from the Citadel are two large cemeteries known as the Cities of the Dead. There is a strong tradition of living close to the dead in Egypt and the scarcity of housing in this huge city has over the last few decades meant that both cemeteries are lived in by some of the cities poorest people. A visit should be undertaken with sensitivity for both the living and the dead whose elaborate and beautiful tombs are the reason for a visit. The Northern (rather than the Southern) Cemetery is most interesting being the burial place of Sultans since the 14th century.
