Deception Valley derives its name from a special type of soil that creates the optical illusion of water, deceiving both birds and people into settling there. It was made famous as Sir Lawrence Van Der Post’s “Lost World” and by Mark and Delia Owens’ book, ‘Cry of the Kalahari’.

It is a shallow valley encompassing 52,000 sq. km of ancient riverbeds. Sporadic rainfall transforms the fossil riverbeds into ribbons of vegetation that meander across the valley, attracting copious wildlife. There are large numbers of cheetah, Kalahari black-maned lion and brown hyena. Wild dog also roam the endless wooded sand dunes.
