South Georgia is a rugged, isolated, inhospitable yet stunningly beautiful island, with snow-covered peaks, blue glacier ice and emerald green bays it provides a stunning backdrop for a large variety of wildlife.
The wildlife in South Georgia is very different to that which you’ll experience in Antarctica. You can expect to see large colonies of fur and elephant seals and king penguins with their characteristic orange coloured chest. Among the birdlife species here are black-browed albatrosses, cape petrels, giant petrels, and Antarctic prions. There is also a healthy colony of reindeer here, introduced with great success by whalers in the 19th century.
In its heyday the island was a centre for whaling and sealing – until the animals were driven almost to extinction, and remnants of this heritage can be found in fascinating Grytviken, where Shackleton’s grave is located. There is also a museum and a church, dating from 1913, as well as the old whaling station, Strømness is also an interesting settlement – it was here that Shackleton sought help to rescue his crew left behind on Elephant Island.
