It was Elephant Island that Shackleton and his crew eventually reached on their epic journey back to civilisation – the first landfall after almost 200 days on the ice covered Weddell Sea. Here he left most of his crew while he completed the treacherous journey to South Georgia, returning later to rescue them.

The ice, currents, and very large numbers of seals and penguins often make landing difficult.
