Remote and wild, ice and high winds often prevent landing at the Dumont d’Urville Station. This French Research Station was been built to replace an earlier one which burnt down and a French airstrip was also constructed here in the late 80s/early 90s. This sparked controversy when Greenpeace photographed dead penguins and the airstrip, though completed, was never used.
