Antipodes Island received its name because it is located almost opposite London on the globe. Like most islands in the group, this was an early centre for sealing. No tourist landings are allowed but cruising in zodiacs reveals an enormous number of erect-crested penguins. The islands are also home to parakeets and albatross.
